What to do right now
1
Turn off the water at the stopcock
Usually under the kitchen sink, by the front door or where the pipe comes into the house. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
2
Switch off electrics near the water
Only if the consumer unit is dry and safe to reach. Never touch wet sockets or switches.
3
Turn off the boiler or immersion heater
This stops the system heating water that’s escaping.
4
Open the cold taps to drain the pipes
Run the cold taps and flush the toilets to empty the system faster.
5
Catch the water and move valuables
Buckets, towels and moving electricals out of the way all help.
6
Take photos for your insurer
Then call us on 01XXX XXXXXX and we’ll talk you through the rest.
How to turn off your stopcock
Find the tap-like valve on the incoming cold pipe. Turn it clockwise (righty-tighty) until it stops. If it’s stiff, don’t force it: call us and we’ll guide you or shut it off at the outside valve.
Under the kitchen sink
Near the front door or under the stairs
In a downstairs loo or utility room
